My Big Moving Adventure

RSS

What have we been up to since we settled in?

Well, we got bikes (and, yes, i’m kicking myself in the ass every day for ditching my bike before we moved here, I could’ve saved myself some $$ but oh well) and have been riding them all over town because Sacramento actually has REAL DEDICATED BIKE LANES!! We’ve also been riding along the American River Trail which is pretty sweet (see pic)

We’ve taken a day trip into San Francisco (which I still don’t like but at least it wasn’t cold/rainy this time - fuck those hills, seriously).  We came over the golden gate bridge which is pretty massive (seriously, how do people walk/bike across it!?) and went down to the piers to see the sea lions (pic). We also saw Alcatraz and all that jazz.

What else? Yesterday we watched the solar eclipse, well as much as you can watch a solar eclipse (pic) that was fun, a bit eery when the sky got all weird and dusky.

So far it’s been quite the adventure, it’s nice to get out of our city comfort zones a bit and check out the rest of what NoCal has to offer, next up is Lake Tahoe and Wine Country (Yum!)

You see that white spot in the upper left?
That’s Venus.
I can see Venus from my couch.

Waiting for the rest of her buddies to make their evening appearance.

Sacramento sunset from our apartment.

We’re settling into a nice rhythm, it feels good to have a home and jobs again (remind me to refer back to this post in 6 months when I hate my job).

We’ve been slowly exploring the town by car, on foot, and most recently on our newly acquired bikes! It’s been a lot of fun. They even have a dedicated bike trail that goes ~32 miles. Our first day we rode 12 miles (our butts are still sore!). We’re really digging it

The only complaints I have at this point are my allergies (that’s what I get for living in the “city of trees”) and the dryness, seriously. A few says ago the humidity in Philadelphia was 86% here it was 22% that’s really freaking dry. It’s great for curly hair, kinda sucks for dry skin (water is seriously our new best friend). But if I have to put lotion on so I can had perpetual good hair days then so be it. We’re here and we’re happy.

People I’ve  been compared to since we got here.

We went to a mixer the other night and on the way out one the patrons walking past me had to stop me and yell that I reminded him of the news anchor from Channel 5 (which means nothing to me since I’m not from the area). Needless to say we were intrigued and decided to check it out. Turns out it’s Dana King from CBS 5 San Francisco. I suppose I can see the resemblance but I’ll still stick with Halle Berry for now :)

First week of work went smoothly. Orientation was a waste of a day, but when are they not? There was a serious focus on spies and bad guys, kind of a joke if you ask me, we’re all working adults not 8 year old nancy drews. Either way I got through it.
My cube is approximately 2.5 times the size of my last one, I’m pretty sure there are studio apartments in Manhattan that are smaller. It’s kinda nice to have the space, though I’m not really sure what to do with it.
My co-workers are pretty cool guys, it’s always interesting to infiltrate an existing team, especially when you can easily pull the “one of these things is not like the other” card. But all in all they’re very welcoming and supportive.
I’ve been to a handful of meetings so far that make me want to pull my hair out of my head, it’s interesting to see how PUT TOGETHER it was at my last job (those of you still there, trust me, I know it’s a clusterfuck but it’s LESS of a clusterfuck than at other places). I’m sincerely hoping that I can bring some fresh ideas to the table that will help them in the long run because they could really use some help in certain areas.
B was enjoying his last week off (he starts on Monday) and was kind enough to start getting the apartment in order. We finally got some living room furniture this weekend (I say finally as if it’s been forever, it’s been just a tad over a week). So I am happily typing away right now on my new comfy couch. Yay! We’ve still got a ways to go to make it completely homey but at least now we can sit on furniture outside of the bedroom.
All in all we’re settling in well, our building had a mixer a few days ago so it was nice to see the cross-section of people who live here and we even made some contacts which will be good. It’s always fun to tell people you’re not from around here, all they want is to get out of town and all we want is to stay, the grass is always greener I guess.
The weather has been pretty great here, I’m looking forward to many more sunny days. (Also, there’s pretty much no humidity, beat that Philly!).
We miss our friends but we’re slowly making a new life for ourselves. And I’m sure once we’ve settled in and completed our furniture buying binge we’ll have a few visitors from back home (you know who you are).

FINALLY

We’re home sweet home and starting to settle in. It’s nice. We’ve unpacked everything that can be unpacked so far (office stuff will have to wait since we have ZERO non-bedroom furniture at the moment). It’s so funny to see how little we have and how we’re still looking at stuff wondering why we thought it was a good idea to bring all the way here. Eh, we’ll figure it out.

I start work tomorrow, it should be interesting after 2 months off, I’m going to have to re-acclimate to being awake before 9 and staying conscious until 5ish (at least enough to drive home).  But it’ll be nice to have a routine again and to get to know my new co-workers etc.

B starts his job next week so he’s tasked with house-bitch work :)

All is (finally) good

First dinner in our new place.

We keep it classy.

Doing the damn thing

The movers came to pick up our stuff on Wednesday. They brought a giant tractor trailer for approximately 1 parking space worth of stuff, it was comical.

Since our stuff is gone we’ve been laying low and just relaxing before the chaos of next week. We’ve started updating our address on important things and are working on “grownup stuff” (bills, utilities, etc). We’re hoping to get one last hurrah in down here in SoCal before we head up to Sacramento, we’ll see if that happens.

It’s been quite the journey so far and I am really lucky to have such a strong and supportive partner (thank you B!) and really awesome friends who will text me down from the edge when I’m in decision overload (you guys better come visit!).

We’re excited for next week, it’ll be nice to feel like we’re a part of human society again instead of just being bystanders.
